Who Owns Science? On Paywalls, Publishers, and paperstacks.io
Science depends on knowledge being shared, discovered, scrutinized, and built upon. Yet much of today’s scientific literature remains locked behind paywalls and is mediated by a handful of commercial publishers and platforms that increasingly control how research is accessed, organized, and made visible. In this talk, we examine how the current scholarly publishing ecosystem emerged, why it has become increasingly dependent on proprietary infrastructures, and what this means for science and society. We also introduce _paperstacks.io_, an open European infrastructure developed at Technische Hochschule Nürnberg for discovering, organizing, and sharing scientific knowledge.
